Modern Warfare 4 Before Launch Early Access & Preload

Modern Warfare 4

Before Launch of Modern Warfare 4: Early Access & Preload

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is in its last few weeks before its global release on 23 October, 2026. The Open Beta is over, the PC system requirements for the game are out and Activision has announced the dates that matter most to the players getting ready to dive into the full release.

The only essential pre-launch date is October 16, when Campaign Early Access for digital pre-orders starts. PC users also have a preload date: Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. PT.

It’s a handy pre-launch window. Fans can now ready their rigs, pre-install the game on PC, and if they have pre-orders – begin the Campaign a week before Multiplayer and the new DMZ mode officially launch on Oct. 23.

Activision’s latest PC announcement reiterates the October 15 start date for preloading and the game will launch on October 23 at 11.59pm local time. Separate confirmation from the official game site also lists the release date as October 23 and beginning of Campaign Early Access on October 16.

For players in India, October 15 at 9:00 AM PT is about 9:30 PM IST That’s right, the PC preload begins at this time, not the full game becomes playable.

Actual play time may vary depending on availability by platform and region, players definitely should not mistake the preload time for the release time.

Modern Warfare 4

Campaign Early Access is beginning on Oct. 16

The greatest pre-release perk is Campaign Early Access.

Players who pre-order or pre-purchase the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition will be able to start playing the full Campaign from October 16, one week prior to the October 23 global release. Activision has confirmed that this perk will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.

This is different from the earlier MW4 Beta.

The Beta was a closed trial with a limited amount of Multiplayer content, a mission from the Campaign and other playable content. It finished on 1 September. Campaign Early Access is, instead, access to the entire Campaign, therefore, October 16 is the first big chance to play the finished story before launch-day.

Requirements for Campaign Early Access

Activision has listed the following requirements:

Digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition
A supported platform the game installed and ready to launch when Early Access begins

The official statement also has a disclaimer that “actual play time may vary based on outages, time-zone differences, and platform availability.”

So it is more accurate to consider October 16 as the confirmed Early Access date for everyone, rather than assuming that every player in the world will have access at the same time.

What Is Playable Before October 23?

This is where the pre-launch schedule becomes clearer. The Beta is over. The next significant playable period is Campaign Early Access.

The differentiation is important because Campaign Early Access doesn’t equate to the whole Modern Warfare 4 experience releasing a week early.

Activision calls it Early Access to the Campaign on October 16. The entire game — including Multiplayer and the new DMZ extraction mode — releases on Oct. 23.

If you’ve getting most of your enjoyment out of Multiplayer, therefore, purchasing one of the eligible digital editions for Campaign Early Access does not mean October 16 is the full launch for Multiplayer.

PC Preload Starts October 15

PC users have the most definitive pre-install dates yet.
Activision announces that digital PC pre-orders will be able to start preloading on October 15 at 9:00 AM PT. That is 15 October 21:30 IST.

The benefit is simple: The massive game download can be done prior to Campaign Early Access starting.
It’s important this is addressed in particular for those with slower connections, now more specific than ever.

A preload period means having the PC already have the game downloaded for when the playable period starts rather than downloading the game after the Early Access is already up and running.

But gamers should also reserve extra free storage beyond the listed game requirement, as Activision warns that compulsory updates can take up more space.

PC storage requirement

The official launch specifications detail:

115 GB of storage, and an SSD is required.

This figure is given for the launch requirements, but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the game will always take up precisely 115 GB of space. Activision has explicitly stated that more storage may be needed for mandatory updates.

If your SSD is nearly full, it is more prudent to free up some space before October 15 than to wait for the preload to not run due to insufficient storage.

Activision also provide a higher specification for high-quality ray tracing at 4K upscaled which requires 32 GB of RAM and GPUs like the Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti with 16 GB of video memory.

The recommended spec is explicitly stated to be for 90 FPS in Multiplayer on High graphics, so it’s not really a blanket promise for all resolutions, modes, or graphics settings.

PC players need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, too

One of the more crucial of prepping details is not to do with graphics performance.
Activision says you need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to play Modern Warfare 4 on PC. More security layers could be added.
That means a PC could fulfill all of the CPU, RAM and GPU requirements, and still be locked out at launch for having the necessary security settings disabled.
This is worth a look before October 15.
This is also true for the wider anti-cheat and security milieu encapsulating the game so it’s not to be considered an optional graphics setting.

AVX Support Is Also Required

The official PC specification has one other piece of hardware older PCs will need to take into account.

Activision states that only Intel and AMD processors with AVX instruction-set support are supported at this time.

This may not be an issue for most relatively recent gaming PCs, but users of older processors should verify their CPU instead of assuming that meeting the minimum GPU requirement is sufficient.

Intel Arc users are also required to have Resizable BAR enabled, according to the requirements that Activision has released.

These are the kind of requirements that tend to get missed as they are listed well below the main CPU and GPU table, but they could be the difference between a PC being ready for launch or not.

What’s New at Launch?

Modern Warfare 4 is not coming to Campaign only.
Currently the official game information is only the following 3 core game modes can be confirmed with certainty:
Campaign
New conflict on the Korean Peninsula in the Campaign, which also serves as a continuation of Captain Price’s story. Activision recaps the story of the previous Modern Warfare in the official story recap, what with the major events of the invasion.

Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 4 will also have 12 new 6v6 maps right from the get go, as well as larger-scale combat maps. Official site The official game site for the Multiplayer is built around “grounded combat, fluid movement, and tactical engagements.”

Collateral Activision has also announced a new Multiplayer mode named Collateral. Multiplayer Attack and Defend Mode: Players make money between rounds to buy guns, gear and upgrades like defusing kits.
It eliminates respawns, killstreaks, auto health regen, and custom loadouts, making the mode play very differently from standard Multiplayer.

DMZ

Modern Warfare 4 sees the introduction of a new DMZ extraction experience. Players enter an open battle field where they gather valuable gear and try to get out while fighting other enemies, or even the NPCs.
A big part of pre-launch planning is that these full game experiences come with the October 23 launch, rather than going live alongside Campaign Early Access.

Watch the Story Recap Before Jumping Into Campaign Early Access

Activision has released an official recap called Modern Warfare 4: The Story So Far.

The video covers key moments from the recent Modern Warfare games, from Task Force 141’s formation to the clash between General Shepherd and Shadow Company. It also revisits the betrayal in Mexico, Makarov’s actions, and Shepherd’s assassination.

If you’re returning to the series, the recap may be a quicker way to catch up than replaying multiple older campaigns right before MW4.

It’s especially useful because MW4 opens with Price working beyond official channels as a large-scale invasion unfolds in South Korea. The new story builds on familiar characters and past events while introducing a fresh conflict.

Standard Edition vs Vault Edition

The Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition both grant you early access to the Campaign if pre-ordered or pre-purchased digitally.
The Vault Edition includes a number of premium content items such as:
BlackCell for one season Hostile Alliance Operator Pack Special Forces Operator Pack Signature Weapon Collection DMZ Deployment Bonus Hunter Killer Operator Skin Gilded Pearl Camo Pack
The official site does say that you get Campaign Early Access with both editions, so players shouldn’t assume to the Vault Edition is required just to play the Campaign on 10/16.
The practical distinction is thus additional content rather than a unique Campaign Early Access date.
