The First Descendant October Update: Freyna Changes & More

The October 15 update for The First Descendant will be a significant one for players who invest in Descendant builds, weapon farming, and high-difficulty missions. Nexon has revealed nerfs to Freyna, Gley, and Enzo, a new Transcendent assault rifle called Monster Hunter, a fifth Onslaught level, and a new map for Trials.

The update also adds a new Trigger Module, a rotating boost to Transcendent Weapon drops, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. Nexon has also detailed plans to rotate older Transcendent Weapons out of the active drop pool and back in at a later date.

This guide covers the changes that have been announced, how they will impact various builds, what rewards and requirements players should be aware of, and which features are planned for a later update, not the October 15 one.

Note: This article is based on Nexon’s October 13 developer preview and official maintenance announcement. The developer has warned that some elements of the preview may change before launch. Players should refer to the official Update 1.4.5 patch notes for the final implementation, including any balance changes or bug fixes.

Maintenance is planned to deliver Update 1.4.5 with the Freyna, Gley and Enzo fixes, Onslaught Stage 5, Trials:

Protocol 002 and the Monster hunter arm.

Freyna Rework: What’s Changing?

Freyna is one of the items on the agenda for this patch. The listed changes impact her Concealment, Catalyst Zone, Ultimate duration and the rate at which her skills scale with MP.

The intent seems to be a “skill focus with a bit of flexibility” build, with two new choices for characterizing damage-over-time and TSP (Toxic Skill Power). Practical implications In the end, how impactful this will be depends on the final coefficients and how the new skills synergize with the current modules.

Skill 2 immediately conceals.

Skill 2 of Freyna will give you Concealment as well as create a Catalyst Zone at her location. Zone inflicts extra damage on enemies suffering from Room 0 Trauma.

This is a synergy to look out for, since it packs both a defensive utility and a damage ability in one. Rather than separation Concealment and damage into two distinct phases of a rotation, it might be that players use the skill

to reposition and keep putting pressure on the affected targets.

The worth of a Catayist Zone will depend on the positioning of the enemies and the frequency at which freyna can apply room 0 trauma. Against enemies who get out of the zone quickly, positioning may mean more than just using the skillc when exhale is off cooldown.

Skill 4 will no longer have a time limit

According to the preview, Freyna’s Skill 4 will remain active until its magazine is empty, rather than ending after a set period.

This changes how the ability’s duration works. With a timer, part of an Ultimate could go unused if enemies die, move out of range, or are otherwise unavailable. Removing the timer makes ammunition the key limit instead.

The preview does not say the skill has unlimited ammo or that all other restrictions are gone. Its stated endpoint is an empty magazine. Check the final patch notes for any related changes to its numbers or behavior.

Freyna’s skills will scale with MP

Nexon plans to give all of Freyna’s skills damage that increases with MP, up to a scaling threshold of 645 MP. Her Synchronization Value will also change to 1.602 to reflect the higher damage coefficients and base power.

For players planning their builds, 645 MP offers a useful benchmark when weighing MP against damage, survivability, and other stats. It is not necessarily the right target for every setup. The best balance will depend on the final damage formula, how often skills can be used, module choices, and the content being played. If reaching 645 MP means giving up too much survivability or another valuable stat, the trade-off may not be worth it.

That interaction could leave those who plan their ability order to go Hypersensitivity first, then Skill 4, happy. How useful it’s going to be will depend on how long the ammo effect lasts, the damage of the fragments, and how reliably players can proc it in tricky fights.

Practical advice: Don’t dismantle or re-build a working Freyna setup just based off the preview. If you can, take a backup of your current setup and see how the changes to the mods and your damage numbers look once the update drops.

New Trigger Module: Prepping in the Dark

The patch adds a Trigger Module named Prepping in the Dark. Its activation conditions are Ground DoT and Concealment-type skills. Effects confirmed : Skill 4 cooldown reduced, Increased Toxic Skill Power.

The module is probably all the more relevant to Freyna’s new kit for those who were running Neurotoxin Synthesis. Ground damage effects and Concealment, may be able to aid in sustaining A repeated skill rotation.
There is a key caveat, however: the preview doesn’t show the full numerical bonuses, required to find out if the module is automatically better than the current choices.

Cooldown reduction is only worth something if it substantially increases uptime on abilities, and Skill Power has to be balanced against the rest of the build. After the patch, check what are the exact rules to trigger, the cooldown, the duration and the bonuses of the module before investing anything into a new build.

Gley Rebalance: Greater Support for Skill-Based Damage

The planned changes to Gley are designed to open up more options for builds centered on skills.

Explosive Life

Explosive Life will lose its firearm-related effects and instead boost Skill Power and Skill Critical Hit Rate. This shifts the module toward builds that deal damage through skills and critical hits.

Players who rely on it in a firearm-focused setup may want to reconsider their choice. Whether the updated module is worthwhile will depend on how its new bonuses stack up against other options.

Blood & Iron

Blood & Iron is getting adjustments to Custom Resource gains and melee damage. Defeating enemies with Rampage will grant extra Custom Resource, which could help players use Skill 4 more often.

The main factor will be how reliably players can earn that resource by defeating enemies. If the change works well in the right encounters, Skill 4 may become a more frequent part of Gley’s rotation.

Demonic Modification

Demonic Modification is expected to receive a significant boost to Skill 4 damage. Nexon says the change should make Skill 4 a practical option for clearing groups of enemies.

Taken together, the updates give Gley players new reasons to review their module setups. However, the preview does not guarantee that one build will be best for every boss or mission. The final damage numbers and enemy behavior will determine where the changes make the biggest difference.

Trials: Protocol 002 Gets a Second Map

The October update will add a second map to Trials, Trials: Protocol 002.

The new map will be part of a daily rotation, like 400% Infiltration. Nexon claims that the rewards and completion time will stay the same.

This is mostly a variety map change, not necessarily a confirmed buff to reward efficiency. Players will now have a different environment to play in, but the developer hasn’t announced any changes to the reward structure or completion target.

Two more features have been teased for the future: a new Variable Code that only works with firearm DPS and a third Trials map. Based on the current information, neither of these should be considered part of the confirmed October 15 update.

Monster Hunter: New Transcendent Assault Rifle

Monster Hunter, a new Transcendent assault rifle, will be added to the game with the update. It is designed to work with critical-hit builds.

The weapon’s appearance and effects change based on how players distribute Transcendent ability points. The preview details three options:

Yellow: Explosions scale with the number of shots. Critical hits cause explosions more often, and explosions can chain to nearby enemies. Yellow values also affect the explosion radius.

Purple: Shots ricochet to up to five nearby enemies after hitting an Elite or Tyrant. Elites, Commanders, Tyrants, and Colossi are prioritized.

Green: Bonus damage against Commanders, Tyrants, and Colossi.

These options suggest different uses. Yellow is for spreading damage among groups, purple adds target coverage against priority enemies, and green is for higher damage against key enemies.

The optimal configuration will depend on the weapon’s base damage profile, critical-hit reliability, and the type of content being farmed. The preview doesn’t give enough information to identify a single best allocation.

It is also important not to assume that a weapon built for critical hits will automatically be better than your current weapon. Test it against similar enemies and consider the rest of your build before committing resources to a full overhaul.

Transcendent Weapon Retirement and Reruns: What Is Scheduled for November?

The developer also mentioned a different system for controlling the Transcendent Weapon drop pool, but that is not set to start with the 15 October patch.

At 12 weapons, the active pool for the announced scheme will be complete. There is one new Transcendent Weapon every month planned. When the thirteenth weapon is introduced, one from the pool will be retired.

Retirement doesn’t mean a weapon that a player already has will disappear. Previously owned retired weapons such as Cygnus and Erasmus can be still used and traded at the character level change, says Nexon; this is also the only change for the ability to drop new copies. There are also plans for substitute weapons for the same role, and irregular returns for retired weapons.

As part of the initial November schedule, EXCAVA is the new Transcendent Weapon, while the one going for 30 days is Malicious Dominator. Retirement will be announced Nexon, one month in advance.

For collectors, the critical distinction is between ownership and acquisition. If you already own a weapon, the system that was announced doesn’t take it away from you. However, if you still want a copy of the weapon that’s going to retire, then its active drop availability is something to keep an eye on.

These are future plans set out in the preview. Players should also look for the November announcement for the final schedule and any adjustments to the system.

Halloween Event Pass and October Events

The October patch also introduces a Halloween Event Pass with free and premium tiers.

The premium track is revealed at 700 Caliber. Cosmetic concepts: Little Red Riding Hood (female universal), Big Bad Wolf (male universal), weapon skin, emote and more. Event missions will provide free growth items and chest attachments as well.

Players are advised to check out the in-game pass before resorting to real money currency especially if you just want one cosmetic for one character, not the whole track.

Other October activities announced are:

Stubborn Tactician’s Medical Support attendance event: Log in every day for growth items as part of daily login gift. Reported milestone rewards are: Raven’s make-up in day 14, Symbol of Little Red Riding Hood to chest attachment on day 21, Burden Basket to chest attachement to Nell to Medical Support on day 33.

Descendant Remake Mission: HQ Special Orders and Sigma Sector Weekly Missions will soon reward Archive Shards and Ultimate Gley’s Amorphous Material Scheme. You also get additional rewards for playing through the specified missions with a specific character on Freyna, Gley or Enzo. Growth Support for Lower Mastery Ranks: Players below or equal to Mastery Rank 20 (MR20) can engage the Overhaul Descendant Deployment Mission for Growth Support Boxes, External Components, Trigger Module Selection Boxes, and more.

Major update: Research acceleration for weekends: Descendant’s Weekend & Accelerate Research event to bring more acceleration and boost effect during weekend.

What will Karel’s Mothership Conquest Event End Up as?

The event part 2 of Karel’s Mothership Conquest will conclude with the update on October 15.

The rewards, Nexon says, “will be given out once the event ends and a space on the Official Website will be established to commemorate those who participated in the event, the Descendants.”

If you”ve been taking part in the event, check its in-game status and reward details prior to the maintenance. It’s also big news to Onslaught players since Stage 5 will become the highest-difficulty challenge after the Conquest event ends.
